Ultimate Evil… Lactose!

Well… what is there to say about that… … …? Lactose intolerance is that evil force that makes you avoid milk. But wait isn’t lactose a sugar? Sooo lactose intolerance is not really about milk! it is all about … sugar (I hope you thought of SOAD and not Celia Cruz). That being said, skim milk, 2 % milk and all of the color coordinated milk related packages (gotta love America and it’s “For dummies milk cartons” guides, sorry about that color blind people)  have reduced fat, YAY… Wait reduced fat, but not reduced sugar? so that means that if I drink skim milk and I’m lactose intolerant it will still be a crusade for the restroom? Well you can decide for yourself but sugars are more water soluble than fat soluble last time I checked.

So lactose is a sugar, then that means that anything that has milk or a processed milk product has lactose? Well maybe, most likely or like my stomach likes to remind me, heck yes it does! (don’t worry Oreos are vegan so they actually don’t have milk, so you are fine people) . IN MY EXPERIECE, *Ahem* 99% of products that say that contain milk, do have lactose to a degree; even some of those that only say they were made in a factory that process milk, nuts, etc., can produce some uncomfortable feeling. So butter, cakes, yogurt, some bread, most pastries, SWEET CHOCOLATE and white chocolate, soft cheese, ice cream and plenty of products that you have no idea why they have milk, can summon evil spirits in your digestive system.

Anyway, if you are lactose intolerant like me just avoid the products mentioned above specially the less processed ones, cause they seem to have more content of milk (stomach’s testimony). Lactase enzyme definitely helps, specially in social situations but it only works, in my experience, on the more solid/processed products. There are plenty of butter and ice cream substitutes on the market, and they are making some substitutes or lactose free options of some of the others.

My recommended milk related products that you can eat (unless you are allergic/intolerant to casein), hard and aged cheese such as parmesan, gouda, some cheddars and yogurt cheese, are indeed very low on lactose (Cause the bacteria eat that sucker! -Did you know that bacteria is the plural word and bacterium the single, RAT-). other than that just try not to die… Soon I will talk about my choices when it comes to shopping for goods, that is if I get at least 10 followers ( although at this rate, this blog will become a diary! but that’s ok too.)
